Conquering The Yips
Have you ever had the yips? Have you ever seen anyone who had them? The yips are a term for putting woes so bad that the player becomes all but paralyzed over the ball. On one hole, the player may leave the ball ten feet short. On the next, he may freight-train it ten feet long. Sam Snead had them, and tried all kinds of remedies. The same with Bernhard Langer. And Ben Hogan's putting became so bad that he eventually quit playing competitively. It was just too painful. But as with so many parts of golf, the yips are all in your head. Lack of confidence leads to tentativeness, which leads to poor putting, which leads to even less confidence. To lose the yips, you've got to believe that you can shake them and putt well again. Try going to a practice green and putting with just one hand. You'd be surprised how well you'll do. And then, when you add the second hand back to your grip, your confidence should be improved. Try it - and good luck! -David DeSmith

How To Really Pick The Right Club
How do you pick a club for an approach shot? Do you go by the yardage or by sight? Many people think that going by the yardage is more accurate. This would be true if they made sure they had the REAL yardage. Most courses have 150-yard markers or sprinkler heads that give yardages to the "center of the green." What these yardages don't tell you is how far from the center the hole is located. It could be ten or twenty yards farther or shorter in some cases, so make sure you factor that in as well. To really pick the right club, make sure you look at the hole location, not just the distance to the center of the green. -David DeSmith from emazing

In Heavy Rough, Hold The Club High
Have you ever hit the ball into thick rough? Or to where the ball is sitting way down in heavy grass? This tip may help you escape such a lie more successfully next time. The key is, NOT to dig down into the grass with your clubhead at address. Digging down at address not only will increase the chances of the ball moving in the grass (which would be a penalty), it also makes it harder to swing the club back through that grass on your downswing. Instead, hold the club just above the surface of the grass at address. This will force you to swing down on the ball during your swing and help pop the ball out of that rough. Good luck! -David DeSmith

Tennis Anyone?
Do you ever have trouble with your weight shift? The dreaded reverse weight shift can have disastrous results, including hitting fat, topping shots, etc., etc. A drill that can help you avoid this and make sure you finish on your lead side where you should is the tennis ball drill. Grab a tennis racket and ball. Then whack a few serves as hard as you can. You will naturally follow through on to your lead leg, just as you should when hitting a golf ball. Practice this, or try the same thing with a baseball and baseball bat. Both drills will get you into the groove of following through correctly. Good luck! -David DeSmith
