Fill Up With Fiber
If you were to choose fruit or a high fat food like cookies or cake, which would be more filling? A recent five-week study was conducted on 34 women, aged 34 to 45, where one-half were of normal weight, the other half were obese. All of the women were served a main dish every day. One day the entrée was high in fat; the next day it would be loaded with fruits and vegetables. After the main dish, the women were allowed to eat as much of the different and various side dishes as they wanted.
The conclusion: all of the women, whether thin or fat, ate 16% fewer calories from the side dishes when the main entrée was the fruit and vegetable offering. Apparently the high fat entrees don't give one the feeling of fullness that the fruits and vegetables do.

Heart healthy chocolate
Heart-Healthy Chocolate
Research shows that pure cocoa contains a powerful antioxidant called epicatechin that may help protect the arteries from disease. But when it comes to the heart-healthy benefits of chocolate, not all varieties are created equal.
A new study published in the journal Nature finds that dark, undiluted chocolate has almost twice as many heart-healthy antioxidants as chocolate diluted with milk. It also finds that drinking a glass of milk with a chocolate bar seriously interferes with the absorption and activity of antioxidants in the bloodstream.
So the next time you get a chocolate craving, reach for the pure dark variety, and don't wash it down with a glass of milk. Remember, too, that dark chocolate has as much sugar as milk chocolate, so go easy. A few small bites can be just as satisfying as a whole bar.

Sleep More, Eat Less
If you have trouble sleeping and are repeatedly sleep-deprived, then you may also be prone to gain weight. Authorities say that people who have poor sleep habits may consume 10 to 15% more calories per day than those who manage to get enough sleep. It seems that people who are not getting a good night's sleep may try to boost their energy levels by eating. Unfortunately, these sleep zombies usually reach for foods that are high in fat, thereby almost guaranteeing a weight gain.
Whenever our sleep patterns are disrupted, our metabolic rates are also compromised. Therefore, developing a good sleep pattern becomes especially important when you're on a weight-loss program. Besides, when you're asleep, you aren't raiding the fridge--even though you may be dreaming about it!
