Calculating Calories

Did you know that for every pound of weight you lose, you need to knock 3500 calories off your total intake? If you'd like to lose about two pounds per week, then you need to reduce your present weekly caloric intake by 7000 calories. Pretty simple, no? One way to determine the exact number of calories you can eat each day and still be able to lose the two pounds per week is to multiply your present weight by 16 if you are a woman and 18 if you are a man. If you are a woman weighing 159 pounds, then 16 X 159 = 2,544 daily calories. This is about what you are eating every day just to maintain your weight. To lose two pounds a week, you will need to consume 7000 fewer calories each and every week. If your weekly total is now 2,544 times seven days, or 17,808 calories, you need to subtract 7,000 from this total to equal 10,808 per week; divide this amount by 7 to equal 1544 per day. Limiting your intake to this amount should result in a two pounds per week loss. If you are inactive or older than 50, you may want to eat a little less than recommended, but never go under about 1200 calories without your doctor's OK, because eating so few calories may cause you to lose some vital nutrients. On the other hand, very active people can sometimes tolerate a little more food and still manage to lose a pound or two each week. - Lynda Cleary
