What Is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance is the body's inability to breakdown the sugar lactose into two simpler sugars that the body can digest. To accomplish this, your body must produce an enzyme called lactase. If your body produces little or no lactase, the lactose is broken down in the intestines through fermentation. The result is bloating, cramps, gas, and diarrhea. Although lactose is present in human breast milk, many scientists believe the condition of lactose intolerance is rare before the age of three unless there is a problem with the small intestine. - Douglas Stevenson
